Qui nous sommes

The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops competitive and market-oriented product/service prototypes for public and private stakeholders.

LIST works across the entire innovation chain, from fundamental and applied research, to the incubation and transfer of technologies.

With its 600 employees, 75% of whom are researchers or innovation experts from all around the world, LIST is active in the fields of informatics, materials and the environment. By transforming scientific knowledge into technologies, smart data and tools, LIST is about empowerment:

–        Empower European citizens in their choices

–        Empower public authorities in their decisions

–        Empower businesses in their strategies

The Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) department at LIST comprises more than 200 life, environmental and IT scientists and engineers across three research units. These units bring together the necessary interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to tackle the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, including climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control.

Research units

– Environmental sensing and modelling

– Environmental and industrial biotechnologies

– Environmental sustainability assessment and circularity

Priority areas

– Environmental and Industrial Biotechnologies

– Space-enabled solutions for the environment and agriculture

– Renewable energies and energy systems

– Water resource management

– Quantification of the impacts of human production and consumption activities on the environment and natural resources

– Support of environmental, agriculture and health policies.

Our advantages

  • Our expertise in Research and Technology development for bioenergy and clean water

Engineers at the centre have developed hardware for waste water treatment, focussed on the removal of micro-pollutants including pharmaceuticals; mainly based on adsorption and microbial remediation. The technological offer includes the development of biocatalysts (enzymes, microbes, microbial consortia) and specific bioprocesses, including  a range of prototypes for process monitoring and control, pilot plants for bioenergy production.

  • Our expertise in characterisation of environmental hazards for risk assessment and management

We develop new methods for the detection and identification of bacteria, viruses and protists and support you in the risk assessment and development of risk management strategies for biological agents. We also develop in vitro models for the assessment of effects of exposure to pollutants and the expertise cover in vitro models for human safety and eco-toxicology.

  • Our strengths: our interdisciplinary and scaling power

Companies’ needs towards “Safer and Sustainable-by design” products and processes are supported by our experts in sustainability, health and environmental risk assessment of substances, products and processes, regarding all lifecycle phases of a product or process

  • Our State-of-the-art facilities

Our unique state-of-the-art facilities for biotechnologies research, also called the GreenTech Platform, allow our customers and researchers to develop solutions from lab to industrial scale. The platform can perform a range of analytical services and relies on its instrumentation, infrastructure and know-how to offer “à la carte” analyses. Overall, the surface area of the facilities for bioprocess engineering comprises 500 m2.

Last but not least, our unique set of equipment and infrastructure allows us to perform bioprocesses at industrial scale.
